![]() The combination of both elements is more than the sum of the parts, complementing each other perfectly and explaining its inclusion in the CBCA’s notable books for the Picture Book of the Year 2022. This is simply gorgeous book, with a beautifully written text and pictures by one of my favourite children’s illustrators. The book ends with the poignant line: “And I’ll remember that we always held hands and that you are my best friend for every moment, of every day, for ever”. He says “I’ll carry you forever”, especially in his heart. Bear pauses and tells her that he will be “sadder than sad”, but that he will remember all they have done together. Then Rat asks the hardest question of all: “What if I have to leave and go somewhere you can’t come?”. Through grumpiness, naughtiness and sickness, Bear tells her he will be there for her. She continues to explore the limits of their friendship: “What about if I am crotchety when I stub my toes” “Will you still hold my hand if I do something really, really bad?” “What if I get sick and I can’t take care of myself?”. Bear reassures her that “Of course we will”. Rat asks a series of questions, beginning with “Will we always hold hands like this, even when we are old and wrinkly… and tottering up this hill?”. ![]() The story of Bear and Rat is told as a conversation between the two friends as they walk and journey together. Written by Christopher Cheng and illustrated by Stephen Michael Kingīear and Rat are the best of friends who do everything together, but Rat wonders if Bear will always be there to hold her hand, no matter what happens…Ī powerful and uplifting story about loving friendship, even through the hardest of times. This month’s book is a picture book, beautifully written and illustrated and full of gentle wisdom. ![]()
